Not much blogging going on from me

Not much blogging going on from me

Hi,

I am in the middle of preparing my home to put on the market later this summer. So wont be spending alot of time online or blogging or visiting some of my favorite blogs.
I have 40+ yrs worth of accumulation of "STUFF" in my home to go through. My dear late husband also was as much a collector and keeper of everything and anything - as I am. There are lots of decisions to make on what Ill keep and or want to save for my new life in Florida some day.
Wish me luck..Ill try to post some pics of my progress.

Update 4/28/2009 : My sister (who came up from Florida for me) helped me go through my clutter the past couple weeks - and I made decisions on lots of items. She packed up 100 small to medium boxes of things "I" am saving and going to put in storage so that the house is less cluttered when I stage it for selling.
Eventually - Im going to have to hold a large Yard Sale...and then donate what doesnt sell.

Wow what a overwhelming process this whole thing is.
Next week the POD arrives and the boxes will get put in there and then go to a storage place.
Kinda crowded around here now.

New Walkman phone appears on Sony Ericssons site

New Walkman phone appears on Sony Ericssons site

Sony Ericsson will launch a new 'Walkman' phone called the W8 that runs on Google's Android OS. The phone recently appeared on the Sony Ericsson website, though there has been no official statement to announce the launch.

The device will feature a 3" touch display and a 3.2 megapixel camera with micro-SD memory up-to 16GB. Although the device will run Android it is not clear which version will come loaded on the device.

This will be the first Android powered phone to sport Sony Ericsson's Walkman brand.

Recently, Sony Ericsson launched the Xperia Play, which became the first PlayStation Certified phone. After the launch of the Xperia Play this might be an attempt to reignite the Walkman branded phones, which have taken a beating at the hands of the iPhone and other smartphones.

The device is expected to be released in India, China, Hong-Kong, Indonesia and Vietnam and will be available in azure, orange and red colors.

Nokia Testing a Quad Core Device on Snapdragon 800

Nokia Testing a Quad Core Device on Snapdragon 800

Windows Phone doesn’t need four cores to run smoothly but Nokia has to keep up with the competition and demands. That being said, Nokia is reportedly working on a device running on a quad-core processor using a Snapdragon 800, contrary to earlier reports.
A leaked documentation appeared on Nokia’s developer forum schema that the Qualcomm SnapDragon S4 MSM8974 is being used for testing. The GPU used is the latest Adreno 330
instead of the 305.
The Snapdragon 800 is a designed for high-tier smartphones and tablets used for high performance and power efficiency. It also supports up to 55 Megapixel camera and 1080p HD display.
This powerful chip on a Nokia Lumia will surely be a monster device that can blow the competition away. We hope that this will power the Nokia EOS if not probably another high-end Lumia before the end of this year till Q1 of 2014.

Mudah Menerjemahkan Halaman Website Dengan Add on Google Translate

Mudah Menerjemahkan Halaman Website Dengan Add on Google Translate

Musings on the new Olympus Pen F

Musings on the new Olympus Pen F

Advertising for the new Olympus Pen F
The new Olympus Pen-F starts shipping this month (here in New Zealand) and, not surprisingly, its creating a lot of internet buzz. Breaking away from the more consumer oriented Pen series cameras, Olympus have created the Pen-F to appeal to the more enthusiast end of the camera market. Yeah - you and me :-)

As someone who loves the early Olympus Pen film cameras (aesthetically speaking at least), this new digital Pen is indeed very enticing. Ill admit that if a large bucket of cash landed in my lap this month, the first thing Id do (after paying off the mortgage and all that other boring stuff), is go out and get the Pen-F. In a heartbeat. Why?

Well, for a start, the internet buzz and early reviews of this camera coming in from the USA has been overwhelmingly positive. Its a superbly made, fantastic looking (lets not deny it) Olympus Pen with a built-in OLED electronic viewfinder (finally for a Pen camera), 20 megapixel sensor with the amazing 5 axis image stabilisation that weve come to know and love.

Top View of the new Pen-F
As you can see from the top-down view, the new Pen also places many of the cameras more important functions (like exposure correction) on the outside of the camera for quick access. All advertising for the camera so far has centred around street shooting, and the Pen-F certainly gives off a strong street-shooters vibe (a-la Fujis cameras).

Im not a street shooter though, so why else would I be interested in the Pen-F? Well, for a start, I am looking for a back-up camera for my EM-5 MkII, and so a small, light, and fully featured camera like the Pen-F would be just the ticket as a second body. Im writing this blog post while off work for a week with a torn disc in my back. While not camera related, this nevertheless makes me ever more aware of my ageing body (Im approaching 50!) and desire to cut down on the gear that I carry. Just a year ago I was a firm believer in the bigger is better (heavier is better) approach to photography. But that was before the EM-5 MkII changed all that. Now Im even loathed to put an external grip on my cameras, whereas when I was a DSLR shooter it was the first accessory I purchased.

So a small, light (relatively) and fully-featured compact Pen body like the Pen-F would be just the ticket as a back-up/second body combination with the EM-5 MkII. In reality, Ill probably end up getting a second hand Panasonic G something or earlier consumer line Pen, since the bucket full of cash probably wont eventuate :-(

Olympus Pen-F in all black
Why bang-on about the Pen-F at all then, since Im not likely to get one? Well, one feature excites me above all others on the new Pen-F, that Im hoping I will get to have eventually on the EM-5 MkII. And thats the new colour modes, controlled on the Pen-F by that funky dial on the front of the camera.

With this new dial on the Pen-F, you can get to some very cool new monochrome and colour presets. There are three in each, with a normal, Tri-X style and infrared mode in the monochrome set (each with varying levels of grain selectable) - while the colour sets give a chrome look to jpegs (again similar to the Fuji film simulations that people love). This is VERY cool, and very exciting. And I hope that its just a firmware tweak so that these settings will eventually be available as an upgrade for the EM-5 MkII? Please Olympus.....

Olympus look to have another stellar product in the Pen-F. A recent interview with Japanese executives from the camera division seemed to indicate that the Pen-F is a test camera for them. A toe-in-the-water for a higher class of enthusiast-level Pen cameras. If it sells well (and I think that it will, despite its initial high asking price), then we may well see more of this style of fully-featured Pen down the track. I certainly hope so.

No more torrents on The Pirate Bay starting 29th February

No more torrents on The Pirate Bay starting 29th February

The Pirate Bay has confirmed that all torrent files being shared by more than 10 people will be deleted on February 29. The decision is causing a small panic among the site’s users, but in reality little will change as all files will remain available through magnet links. The Pirate Bay crew told TorrentFreak that this is merely a “step forward in technology” and confirmed that the site is here to stay.

For half a decade The Pirate Bay has been the leading BitTorrent site, but soon its users will no longer be able to download .torrent files.

The first step in this direction will be taken on February 29, the Pirate Bay announced today.

Instead of deleting all torrent files at once, The Pirate Bay crew will start with all files that have more than 10 peers. This is to guarantee that people will still be able to download less popular files, which tend to start slower through magnets.

While there are fears that this is the end of The Pirate Bay, nothing could be further from the truth. For users of the site the upcoming switch is expected to go smoothly.

People will be able to download all files as usual, but instead of using a .torrent file downloads will be initiated through a magnet link. The actual content of the .torrent file will then be downloaded from other people instead of The Pirate Bay’s servers.

Although it might take a little longer for less popular downloads to get started, all files will remain available. Also, users will still be able to upload .torrent files, which will be converted into magnet links by The Pirate Bay.

The Pirate Bay team told TorrentFreak that the transition to a magnet site is “a step forward in technology,” and one that will make the site more resistant to being shut down.

Without torrents it takes less bandwidth to host a Pirate Bay proxy site which are used to circumvent ISP blockades in countries like Italy, Ireland, The Netherlands and Belgium. In addition, the Pirate Bay will become much more portable and thus easier to move around.

How easy it is to carry a copy of a torrent-less Pirate Bay became apparent last week, when a user reduced the entire site to 90 megabytes – small enough to fit on a tiny thumb drive. The Pirate Bay team likes the idea of a “portable” backup of the site and told TorrentFreak that they are considering releasing an official version in the future.

It’s quite remarkable to see how The Pirate Bay has transformed in recent years. The site is no longer hosting a tracker, and soon .torrent files will be entirely replaced by magnet links. Despite these changes the iconic file-sharing site is picking up new users every week.

The Pirate Bay crew told TorrentFreak that users can be assured that they have no intention of going anywhere in the near future. With or without torrents, the site is here to stay.

On that Microsoft Nokia sale

On that Microsoft Nokia sale

By now you would have read countless of op-eds about Nokias sale of their phone division to Microsoft. Suffice to say I have nothing to add, except that I am glad that we will still be getting Nokia phones, one way or another. Sure, phones with Nokia as a brand will go away eventually, but that would happen if Microsoft doesnt buy them anyway.

In fact, this whole sale reminds me of IBMs sale of their PC division to Lenovo. Many ThinkPad fans, like me, were understandably concerned that Lenovo would not have treated the brand with enough respect. Fortunately that hasnt been the case. Long time ThinkPad designers stayed on, and today Lenovo makes some of the best ThinkPad laptops we have ever seen. The same can happen with Nokias phone division if handled properly.

It will be a while before we will see the benefits from the sale. But heres hoping that Nokias phone hardware engineers and Microsofts software engineers will work closer than ever. Past Lumia hardwares has always been hampered by Microsofts lack of dedication to the Windows Phone platform, so a hardware division that could exert some influence on Microsofts software division will do some good.

In any case, this sale will at least gives us hope for a Lumia Surface phone with stonking good camera.

Nostalgia Running Windows 3 11 On Ubuntu

Nostalgia Running Windows 3 11 On Ubuntu

Nostalgia : Running Windows 3.11 On Ubuntu

Microsoft Windows 3.11 Released back in 1992-1994 was one of the most popular version of Microsoft Windows Operating System family that made Windows a brand on desktop computers and established supremacy of Microsoft on Desktops. At that time it faced competition from IBM OS/2 and other gui frontends like GEOS and VisiOS and of course Apple however with its innovative features and user friendly GUI Windows 3.11 became one of the most popular and used version of Windows operating system .

A few days back I found in my CD collection Windows 3.11 setup files ,Now since Windows 3.11 was the first Operating System (GUI shell since Windows 3.11 was more of a GUI shell running on MSDOS ) I had used a lot of good memories were attached to running Windows 3.11 on my 386 , 40 Mhz , 4MB ram PC that i had back in 1995. So i wanted to install it again.

Since i use Ubuntu i knew it was possible to run Windows 3.11 under qemu or Vmware after installing MSDOS in virtual machine , but i wanted to try a different approach .

A few posts back i had mentioned it was possible to run some old classic dos games under Ubuntu/Linux using DosBox , while writing that post idea struck me about running Windows 3.11 inside DosBox instead of using bulky Machine Virtualisation softwares so well i started fiddling around and here is how i installed DosBox in ubuntu and installed Windows 3.11 in it.
It is very straight forward and you should not have trouble installing it : -

To install dosbox under ubuntu follow these steps (Assuming your repositories are in order if not read this): -

Open (Application -> Terminal) and type the following command in Terminal Window

sudo apt-get install dosbox

after the process is over create a directory say (/home/dosdrive) where you would like to keep your dos files .

Now extract / copy the Windows 3.11 Installation files to the directory created in above step.
I had extracted the Windows 3.11 archive in directory /home/user/dosdrive/Windows3.11

A ScreenCast Showing Installation of Windows 3.11 Under DosBox

Now launch DosBox by typing in dosbox in terminal window.

after launching DosBox type

mount d /home/dosdrive

to mount dosdrive folder as drive letter d in dosbox . You are free to use any drive letter you want or directory you like to use.

now chdir to d drive and go to the directory where you have copied the windows installation files and type

setup

Opening Screen of Windows 3.11 Installation
Installation in progress (Still in Dos mode )

Follow instructions as shown during installation type in the directory where you would like to install windows (note: change drive letter to d or any other you have assigned using mount command ) and wait of installation to over.
Installation now in graphical mode
Windows setup in progress

Also if the installation or system is running too slowly press Ctrl + F - 12 to increase CPU Cycles i was able to use Windows 3.11 in nice speed in 10,000 Cpu Cycles . You can experiment this value.
Windows 3.1 Starting Up

After installation is over if everything went all right go to the directory where you have installed windows (For me D:Windows ) and type win it should launch Windows 3.11 within few seconds.

Default Windows 3.1 desktop

Windows 3.1 File Manager

Windows 3.1 Mine Sweeper Game
Write (default) Word Processor

Cardfile tool under Windows

I feel probably Windows 3.11 was the most descent of Windows os - fast , quick and less error prone ,you can still get Windows 3.11 if you dont have installation media from various abandonware sites on the Internet , i would not like to mention exact links since this would amount to piracy however if you are really serious you can also use google to find them . But i wouldnt recommend downloading pirated versions .

Some KeyStrokes to remember while using DosBox : -

ALT-ENTER Go full screen and back.

ALT-PAUSE Pause emulation.

CTRL-F1 Start the keymapper.

CTRL-ALT-F5 Start/Stop creating a movie of the screen.

CTRL-F4 Swap mounted disk-image (Only used with imgmount).
Update directory cache for all drives!

CTRL-F5 Save a screenshot.(png)

CTRL-F6 Start/Stop recording sound output to a wave file.

CTRL-ALT-F7 Start/Stop recording of OPL commands.

CTRL-ALT-F8 Start/Stop the recording of raw MIDI commands.

CTRL-F7 Decrease frameskip.

CTRL-F8 Increase frameskip.

CTRL-F9 Kill dosbox.

CTRL-F10 Capture/Release the mouse.

CTRL-F11 Slow down emulation (Increase dosbox Cycles).

CTRL-F12 Speed up emulation (Decrease dosbox Cycles).

ALT-F12 Unlock speed (turbo button).

OpenStack Clients on Mac OS Yosemite

OpenStack Clients on Mac OS Yosemite

Clearly I havent written a blog post recently enough. That must explain the negative karma behind running into a tricky problem.

As we all know, "pipin aint easy". I held off upgrading to Yosemite for a long time so as not to break my functioning Mac with OpenStack clients. However, I found time and reason to upgrade last weekend and had helped several others through the Mac client solutions a week prior.

Alas, it was not to be a sweet journey for me. I endedup with the dreaded xmlrpc_client issue. Some coworkers determined that you could resolve this by uninstalling "six" and then reinstalling "six". Unfortunately that doesnt really work. A "sudo -H pip uninstall six" did do the right thing, but "easy_install six" never succeeded. And I should note the reason that six in pip doesnt work in the first place is that the Mac OS Yosemite itself has a downrev version of six installed.

The trick, at least in my case, was to "type -a easy_install" and note that there are two versions of easy_intall. Pick the second one and you are off to the races. Heres the steps if you are still reading:

On Vacation but Java updates from Oracle and Apple Be sure to have the UNmessed up Apple Java update!!! and Adobe Flash Update

On Vacation but Java updates from Oracle and Apple Be sure to have the UNmessed up Apple Java update!!! and Adobe Flash Update

--

Im on a break while I work on other things. But here is some quickie news. I expect, if youre a regular reader, you know how to dig up the URLs and CVE reports by now.

I) MASSIVE CRITICAL Java update from both Oracle and Apple, including 40 (FORTY) security patches. Apples update is for Java version 1.6 only, the part of Java included in OS X. The update is for OS X 10.6 - 10.8.

II) Apple MESSED-UP their original Java update release, which was labeled "JavaForOSX2013-003". This mess KILLED Java and must be updated with what replaced it: "JavaForOSX2013-004". From my experience, Software Update did NOT provide me with the updated version. I had to grab oo4 myself and apply it myself. You may have to do so as well.

Here is an article to help you sort out whether you got STUNG by Apples mess or not, and how to clean it up. Thank you to 9to5Mac.com:

Bug in Apple Java update – now fixed, but check you have the correct version

III) Adobe tossed out a scheduled Flash update that patched one critical security hole. If you use Flash any more, be sure you have applied this latest update.

OTHER AMUSING NEWS:

Im running into hilarious FUD about the MacKeeper crapware from none other than one of their competitors. They claim you can REMOVE crappy MacKeeper by installing THEIR crappy software instead. Needless to say, avoid replacing crap with crap. If you foolishly installed MacKeeper, go to their website to learn how to UNinstall it.

Also amusing: Apparently crappy MacKeeper has been sold to some other company, who apparently have changed none of crappy ZeoBITs evil marketing moron tactics. But at least it is good to know that everyones efforts to kick ZeoBIT in the dangly bits has been successful. ZeoBIT is now out of the picture, hurray. Lets hope their crapware is soon to follow.

Also note: There has been a rash of Microsoft Office specific malware. I personally dont care or follow such malware. Youre on your own if you still put up with Microsoft. But its worth noting that Office malware continues. Check out my net buddy Thomas Reeds The Safe Mac security blog for details. I believe Intego and Sophos have been following this scourge as well. Links to their sites are on the right of this page.

Enjoy the summer!
Stay cool.
Stay kewl.

NO Edit HTML Option On New Blogger

NO Edit HTML Option On New Blogger

We bloggers often manipulate the blogger using "Edit HTML" option. Since few look and feel changes can not be done through Blogger interface. Those bloggers who have knowledge on HTML usually do edit the template to make their blog design more effective.

Recently all interfaces for all bloggers migrated to new blogger interface. Many bloggers would have found no "Edit HTML" option. Even I was searching for the same and discovered the HTML option. Just follow the below 2 options, it will take you to the old blogger interface, as usual you can edit the HTML template.
Option 1:

1. Click on new "Earning" link, it will show you the link "Current Monetize Tab".
2. Click on "Current Monetize Tab", then you will be navigated to the old blogger interface.
3. Then you can access the "Design" and "Edit HTML" option.

Option 2:

1. Know your blogger id. It will be like 6196755291810133359.
2. Then add to this URL: http://draft.blogger.com/html?blogID=. Once you add it will looks like below.
      http://draft.blogger.com/html?blogID=6196755291810133359

New Render Nokia Windows Phone Leaked on Video

New Render Nokia Windows Phone Leaked on Video

Unknown Nokia Windows Phone
While we usually don’t pay too much attention to phone renders that are spotted in video clips – most of the time they are prototypes and inaccurate representations of the final devices unless they’ve been announced before. Well, a render of an unannounced Nokia Windows Phone device was recently spotted in an official Nokia video by the folks over at MyNokiaBlog.com. The phone looked sleek and bore a slight resemblance to the Lumia 800, except that this one featured more curves.
What’s interesting about the video is that it was suddenly made private not too long after it was reported – fortunately it wasn’t before some screenshots of the phone were taken. At the moment it could be anybody’s guess what this device will be, and there’s no guarantee that the phone will even see the light of day, but if it ever makes an appearance in the future, but this could probably be the public’s first glimpse of the device. What do you think of the phone’s design?
