Our process can be the game changer

How we process a painting and effects achieved with different tools really is one of the more fascinating aspects of art. Our tools can take an ordinary subject and make it extraordinary. No question we can stay with a single process or art movement, improve and make good art all of our lives, but will it ever become extraordinary?

For me, this year is about change, moving off the line from my norm....perhaps looking for extraordinary. Nine months in, my output has dropped from previous years, partly due to experimentation and enormous canvases. My curiosity wants to know the outcome. In the meantime, as my course becomes more defined, its easy to know what didnt workout.

Ive also come to realize moving off the line is changing my process, including some of my tools.... and carrying over into my representational style. Can I or should I keep them separated? Change has implication because Artist/Designers have a tendency to create and destroy... also part of the process......

Trafalgar Fountain was one of my attempts at "moving off the line" and another one going no where! I like the subject and think staying with a "less-is-more" painting approach is the way to go. No question this thing needs less of everything! My first step will be to remove the chaos.

Musings on the new Olympus Pen F

Advertising for the new Olympus Pen F

The new Olympus Pen-F starts shipping this month (here in New Zealand) and, not surprisingly, its creating a lot of internet buzz. Breaking away from the more consumer oriented Pen series cameras, Olympus have created the Pen-F to appeal to the more enthusiast end of the camera market. Yeah - you and me :-)

As someone who loves the early Olympus Pen film cameras (aesthetically speaking at least), this new digital Pen is indeed very enticing. Ill admit that if a large bucket of cash landed in my lap this month, the first thing Id do (after paying off the mortgage and all that other boring stuff), is go out and get the Pen-F. In a heartbeat. Why?

Well, for a start, the internet buzz and early reviews of this camera coming in from the USA has been overwhelmingly positive. Its a superbly made, fantastic looking (lets not deny it) Olympus Pen with a built-in OLED electronic viewfinder (finally for a Pen camera), 20 megapixel sensor with the amazing 5 axis image stabilisation that weve come to know and love.

As you can see from the top-down view, the new Pen also places many of the cameras more important functions (like exposure correction) on the outside of the camera for quick access. All advertising for the camera so far has centred around street shooting, and the Pen-F certainly gives off a strong street-shooters vibe (a-la Fujis cameras).

Im not a street shooter though, so why else would I be interested in the Pen-F? Well, for a start, I am looking for a back-up camera for my EM-5 MkII, and so a small, light, and fully featured camera like the Pen-F would be just the ticket as a second body. Im writing this blog post while off work for a week with a torn disc in my back. While not camera related, this nevertheless makes me ever more aware of my ageing body (Im approaching 50!) and desire to cut down on the gear that I carry. Just a year ago I was a firm believer in the bigger is better (heavier is better) approach to photography. But that was before the EM-5 MkII changed all that. Now Im even loathed to put an external grip on my cameras, whereas when I was a DSLR shooter it was the first accessory I purchased.

So a small, light (relatively) and fully-featured compact Pen body like the Pen-F would be just the ticket as a back-up/second body combination with the EM-5 MkII. In reality, Ill probably end up getting a second hand Panasonic G something or earlier consumer line Pen, since the bucket full of cash probably wont eventuate :-(

Why bang-on about the Pen-F at all then, since Im not likely to get one? Well, one feature excites me above all others on the new Pen-F, that Im hoping I will get to have eventually on the EM-5 MkII. And thats the new colour modes, controlled on the Pen-F by that funky dial on the front of the camera.

With this new dial on the Pen-F, you can get to some very cool new monochrome and colour presets. There are three in each, with a normal, Tri-X style and infrared mode in the monochrome set (each with varying levels of grain selectable) - while the colour sets give a chrome look to jpegs (again similar to the Fuji film simulations that people love). This is VERY cool, and very exciting. And I hope that its just a firmware tweak so that these settings will eventually be available as an upgrade for the EM-5 MkII? Please Olympus.....

Olympus look to have another stellar product in the Pen-F. A recent interview with Japanese executives from the camera division seemed to indicate that the Pen-F is a test camera for them. A toe-in-the-water for a higher class of enthusiast-level Pen cameras. If it sells well (and I think that it will, despite its initial high asking price), then we may well see more of this style of fully-featured Pen down the track. I certainly hope so.

No more torrents on The Pirate Bay starting 29th February

The Pirate Bay has confirmed that all torrent files being shared by more than 10 people will be deleted on February 29. The decision is causing a small panic among the site’s users, but in reality little will change as all files will remain available through magnet links. The Pirate Bay crew told TorrentFreak that this is merely a “step forward in technology” and confirmed that the site is here to stay.

For half a decade The Pirate Bay has been the leading BitTorrent site, but soon its users will no longer be able to download .torrent files.

The first step in this direction will be taken on February 29, the Pirate Bay announced today.

Instead of deleting all torrent files at once, The Pirate Bay crew will start with all files that have more than 10 peers. This is to guarantee that people will still be able to download less popular files, which tend to start slower through magnets.

While there are fears that this is the end of The Pirate Bay, nothing could be further from the truth. For users of the site the upcoming switch is expected to go smoothly.

People will be able to download all files as usual, but instead of using a .torrent file downloads will be initiated through a magnet link. The actual content of the .torrent file will then be downloaded from other people instead of The Pirate Bay’s servers.

Although it might take a little longer for less popular downloads to get started, all files will remain available. Also, users will still be able to upload .torrent files, which will be converted into magnet links by The Pirate Bay.

The Pirate Bay team told TorrentFreak that the transition to a magnet site is “a step forward in technology,” and one that will make the site more resistant to being shut down.

Without torrents it takes less bandwidth to host a Pirate Bay proxy site which are used to circumvent ISP blockades in countries like Italy, Ireland, The Netherlands and Belgium. In addition, the Pirate Bay will become much more portable and thus easier to move around.

How easy it is to carry a copy of a torrent-less Pirate Bay became apparent last week, when a user reduced the entire site to 90 megabytes – small enough to fit on a tiny thumb drive. The Pirate Bay team likes the idea of a “portable” backup of the site and told TorrentFreak that they are considering releasing an official version in the future.

It’s quite remarkable to see how The Pirate Bay has transformed in recent years. The site is no longer hosting a tracker, and soon .torrent files will be entirely replaced by magnet links. Despite these changes the iconic file-sharing site is picking up new users every week.

The Pirate Bay crew told TorrentFreak that users can be assured that they have no intention of going anywhere in the near future. With or without torrents, the site is here to stay.

Nokia PC Suite the latest update 2012

This feature is similar to the Sony Ericsson PC Suite which Ive shared before.

This software provides several new functions to their Nokia mobile phone users, including editing, backing up and syncing files. Nokia PC Suite for 2012 is quite good at doing it, other than that the latest Nokia PC suite 2012 is also very easy to
operation with a very nice interface and intuitive Hannya youll get used to using it in a matter of minutes.

With Nokia PC Suite for 2012 All functions are accessible from the main interface, as soon as the phone is successfully connected to a computer. There are four connectivity options: Bluetooth, infrared, serial cable (CA-42) and a USB cable.

Sometimes, some connection problems can occur when trying to pair your phone and computer. Also transfer files or other functions of the application may be not available. Painting the Giant Bird Pelagornis

The April issue of Scientific American magazine includes a feature on Pelagornis, the largest known flying bird with a 21 foot wingspan. You can see the artwork being created in this free six-minute video. (Link to YouTube)

In the sketches, I focus on the bird taking flight, since flight dynamics is the emphasis of the authors of the scientific study. These birds were specialized for soaring flight, not flapping. Taking off would be a big moment. Design director Michael Mrak likes the basic design of #1, with the warm color scheme of the one in the lower right.

I make the "2D to 3D" maquette out of paper, armature wire, and two-part epoxy sculpting compound called Magic Sculpt. Its stronger than Sculpey, and doesnt need to go in the oven. The YouTube video shows the construction method.

The final art is oil on illustration board, about 12 x 18 inches. It appears in the April, 2016 issue of Scientific American magazine.

New GITEX Christie introduces the new J series projector range

Christe is a very well known projector manufacturer. The opening of The Atlantic in Dubai was, in fact, done using the companys projectors. They are at Gitex to showcase some of their new products this year.

One of them is the Christie J series range, a compact (in its class) projector solution that combines the best of the companys innovations into one affordable package (if ever these things can be affordable). The most interesting feature of the projector is the Christe Twist, a hardware-based pixel mapping technology that can adjust any image onto the surface it is projecting on, and stitch multiple images into one seamless image. An example is below.

The Christe J series is also fitted with the 3-chip DLP platform along with 22,000 lumens of Xenon brightness to help deliver proper color accuracy and clean, crisp images. The J series comes in various low to high-end models, with the Christe Roadster HD20K-J featured above carrying a price tag of USD 80,000.

PAC Attacks When Using HTTPS! VPN To The Rescue

Introduction: What I discuss below fits within the realm of computer networking. As such, it is complicated, has a learning curve and may require homework, time and patience to understand. However, as usual, Ive tried to translate the technology into something reasonably easy to comprehend and Ive provided some useful reference links.

Open Wi-Fi Hotspots Are Not Our Friend

Using open, no password required, hot spot Wi-Fi routers is dangerous. Its trivial for anyone also on the router to spy on all your Internet activity. There are several tools for the hack job on all computer platforms. So what do you do?

Using HTTPS on the Web is one generally reliable way to encrypt your connections, resulting in hacker spies seeing only gibberish pass between your computer and your destination. Thats great, except a lot of servers still use old SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) protocols that are no longer secure, and there are older browser applications that still allow the use of SSL. The replacement technology is TLS (Transport Layer Security) and is considerably safer, albeit not perfect as of yet. For general Web access at a Wi-Fi hotspot, HTTPS via TLS should be adequate.

Except this happened:

The most likely way the attack might be carried out is for a network operator to send a malicious response when a computer uses the dynamic host configuration protocol to connect to a network. Besides issuing addresses, DHCP can be used to help set up a proxy server that browsers will use when trying to access certain URLs. This attack technique works by forcing the browser to obtain a proxy autoconfig (PAC) file, which specifies the types of URLs that should trigger use of the proxy. Because the malicious PAC code receives the request before the HTTPS connection is established, the attackers obtain the entire URL in plaintext....

(Emphasis mine).

This is a fairly sophisticated attack for the moment. But again could be made trivial with proliferated hacking tools.

So now what do we do?

If youre a casual web browsing user who doesnt mind having your URL connections surveilled in public, you wait for web browser and server updates to solve this problem.

VPN

If youre a professional who must NOT be surveilled in your work online, you enroll into a VPN (Virtual Private Network) service. I wont go into the techy details. But a good VPN service allows you to encrypt every little thing you do on the Internet from wherever you are, on whatever router youre using, out to a server run by the VPS server somewhere else on the planet. You can typically choose your exit server from a list provided by the VPN service. After you exit the VPN server out to the actual Internet, no one can trace back who you are. None of your data is visible at your Wi-Fi router location. Everything is encrypted through the VPN service. Problem solved.

There are many VPN services available. Some of them offer Life Time Membership for a reasonable price. There is typically one VPN service or another running a special offer via a one of the Deal websites / email lists at any point in time.

As examples, Im on the MacAppware and 9To5Toys Deal lists, which are part of a network of Deal services run through StackCommerce. They offer a variety of hardware, software and service Deals at special discount prices, typically for a limited period of time. If you see something you like on the lists, you check it out. If you like it, you buy it. (Please note how I am deliberately not providing URLs as I am not selling or recommending any of these services. Do a search on their names and youll find them).

Continuing these examples: 9To5Toys is currently offering both a 3-year subscription and full lifetime subscription to Tiger VPN for decent prices. MacAppware is currently featuring five different VPN service discounts. They include HideMyAss!, Hotspot Shield Elite, PureVPN, and VPN Unlimited.

The closest Ill come to a recommendation is to say that I have a friend who swears by HideMyAss! He regularly uses it to stream sports game video from Europe with great results. I have a lifetime membership with proXPN that works fine for my purposes.

One limiting factor with VPNs is speed, aka bandwidth. Obviously, you run into this factor when youre streaming a lot of data at once, for example when watching video. If thats what you want to do via VPN, it pays to shop around for the fastest service. Be sure to verify that what you read about a VPN service is real. For example, PureVPN calls itself "The Worlds Fastest VPN." Maybe it is or maybe it isnt. Check out a number of reviews to find out what users have experienced according to their usage of the VPN.

Another limiting factor is which VPN connection protocols the services offer. They may use OpenVPN and/or PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol). Its important to know what your hardware and OS can handle. Some cannot, for example, deal with OpenVPN. Therefore, in this case, you dont want a VPN service that only offers OpenVPN. Youll want one that offers PPTP. Many provide both.

From a security point of view, at the moment it is safer to use PPTP. OpenVPN has had a series of security compromises and was at one point assumed to be hackable. The OpenVPN has been good about patching known security flaws, but they have recently been discovered on a regular basis. Meanwhile, PPTP is considered by some to be broken. Microsoft recommends using a more recent and superior alternative protocol called L2TP/IPSec, with which I am somewhat unfamiliar. If a VPN offers it, consider using it instead of PPTP.

I could link here to a comparison chart of these three protocols, but what I found online was not up-to-date and would therefore be misleading. From a fanatical security perspective, it may be that all three of these protocols are hackable IF someone wants to target specifically YOU. VPN attacks are sophisticated and take time to enact. As such, for general professional use, any of these three VPN protocols is adequate. Open source advocates of course prefer OpenVPN because its protocol is entirely available for scrutiny and theoretically that means the security holes are found and patched more readily. Meanwhile, Microsoft has been involved with both PPTP and L2TP/IPSec, which may give users a reason to cringe. You decide.

Nice things about good VPN services:

First, my VPN rates the quality/speed of their own servers day-to-day. Im in New York. So youd think connecting to their New York City server would be great! It used to be. Now its rated on the bottom of their connection listing. IOW its the last server I want to use. Instead, I typically use the Chicago server, which is in the top third of their connection list. I often visit sites within the UK, in which case I use their London server. Thankfully, that is also in the top third of their connection list at this time.

Meanwhile, if I want to use an exit server in or near Japan, forget it! There arent any. That could have killed my interest in their VPN service, if it mattered to me. The closest server is in Singapore, and its near the bottom of the connection list. IOW: It may be important to know what servers a VPN offers, according to your purposes.

Second, my VPN regularly changes its servers in cases where they are being blocked by ISPs. My VPN application grabs the latest list of available servers every day, which prevents me for connection to what amounts to a dead server.

Why are VPN servers blocked? This gets into a controversy regarding copyright, marketing and costs. To give you at least a rough idea of how and why this can happen: Imagine youre the BBC in the UK. Someone uses VPN to connect to a London server. The IP address of that server is broadcast to every website to which you connect. Its obviously a British IP address, so you look to be British. Therefore, you can access all British web content as a British citizen. You have full access to all BBC web media, including any of their posted TV program streams. What can be bad about that is that: (A) You may not actually be in Britain. Youre using a VPN. (B) If you arent British, you have no access to British copyrighted media. (C) BBC marketing people may go maniacal that youre breaking through an artificial marketing zone barrier to access media directly in the UK. (D) You havent paid the taxes that support the BBC. Therefore, the BBC is motivated to find and have blocked all VPN servers within the UK.

Then theres that annoying totalitarianism issue where FAILed governments abuse their citizens, rather than serve them. Check this out:

Countries Where VPN Use is Prohibited

WHAT COUNTRIES HAVE BANNED THE USE OF VPN?
VPN is typically banned in countries that have authoritative laws, such as China, North Korea and Iran. With limited access to a majority of online content, in order to unblock blocked websites, citizens, tourists and expats in those countries typically resort to the use of proxy servers and VPN software.

WHY HAVE THESE COUNTRIES MADE VPN USAGE ILLEGAL?
Some countries have banned the use of Virtual Private Networks so that they can maintain a bird’s eye view on all online movement made by their citizens, who the governments of these countries consider as nonconformists, as well as to control the information their citizens have access to by censoring websites with liberal or opposing views. VPNs allow to bypass censorship and keep all online activities confidential.

Such is our species. I thoroughly recommend deposing all such governments. Thats what revolutions are for. We all deserve personal freedom and privacy, no exceptions (apart from the crooks and crazies).

So what about DNSCrypt?

I use DNSCrypt on all my Macs. Ive had no trouble with it and it kindly encrypts all my DNS lookups for free. It works hella better than my IPSs DNS servers! (Time Warner Cable :-P). Thank you OpenDNS and Cisco! It prevents any open Wi-Fi hotspot hackers from seeing what websites I want to visit. It even prevents your ISP or anyone else from surveilling your DNS lookups.

Except DNSCrypt wont help with the PAC attacks on HTTPS. Sorry! The resulting IP address still ends up in-the-clear when using the PAC hack. Nonetheless, DNSCrypt is a great precaution and works extremely well. Finishing DNSCrypt took years of annoying betas. Now its something approaching perfection. Highly recommended.

Researchers from the University of Michigan revealed that direct contact with skin or eyes can make chemotherapy drugs or cancer drugs can be absorbed by the body. For the nurses who daily deal with these medicines, this can have serious impacts.

Exposure to chemotherapy drugs that are not accidental could make the nurses experienced the nervous system and reproductive disorders. Even when new and absorbed into the circulatory system, the toxins can trigger a proficiency level also has the risk of blood cancers.

“Any contact on the surface of the skin or eyes as dangerous as needle stick. To crash a syringe, the nurse usually encounter in the examination but chemotherapeutic drugs are rarely noticed,” said one researcher, Dr. Christopher Friese.

Research conducted by Dr. Friese and his team showed, 17 percent of nurses working in cancer clinics claimed to have involved direct contact with chemotherapy drugs in both the skin and eyes. This data was obtained after the 1339 nurses surveyed across America.

Institute for occupational safety and health in the United States actually had a guide on how to safe handling of cancer drugs. But because it is not required, only some of the nurses who are already applying these guidelines while remaining less obeyed.

One of the appeal contained in these guidelines are, the nurses who handle chemotherapy drugs have to wear certain equipment to protect themselves. Equipment consists of gloves and gowns to protect the body from spills of drugs.
