Nostalgia Running Windows 3 11 On Ubuntu

Nostalgia Running Windows 3 11 On Ubuntu

Nostalgia : Running Windows 3.11 On Ubuntu

Microsoft Windows 3.11 Released back in 1992-1994 was one of the most popular version of Microsoft Windows Operating System family that made Windows a brand on desktop computers and established supremacy of Microsoft on Desktops. At that time it faced competition from IBM OS/2 and other gui frontends like GEOS and VisiOS and of course Apple however with its innovative features and user friendly GUI Windows 3.11 became one of the most popular and used version of Windows operating system .

A few days back I found in my CD collection Windows 3.11 setup files ,Now since Windows 3.11 was the first Operating System (GUI shell since Windows 3.11 was more of a GUI shell running on MSDOS ) I had used a lot of good memories were attached to running Windows 3.11 on my 386 , 40 Mhz , 4MB ram PC that i had back in 1995. So i wanted to install it again.

Since i use Ubuntu i knew it was possible to run Windows 3.11 under qemu or Vmware after installing MSDOS in virtual machine , but i wanted to try a different approach .

A few posts back i had mentioned it was possible to run some old classic dos games under Ubuntu/Linux using DosBox , while writing that post idea struck me about running Windows 3.11 inside DosBox instead of using bulky Machine Virtualisation softwares so well i started fiddling around and here is how i installed DosBox in ubuntu and installed Windows 3.11 in it.
It is very straight forward and you should not have trouble installing it : -

To install dosbox under ubuntu follow these steps (Assuming your repositories are in order if not read this): -

Open (Application -> Terminal) and type the following command in Terminal Window

sudo apt-get install dosbox

after the process is over create a directory say (/home/dosdrive) where you would like to keep your dos files .

Now extract / copy the Windows 3.11 Installation files to the directory created in above step.
I had extracted the Windows 3.11 archive in directory /home/user/dosdrive/Windows3.11

A ScreenCast Showing Installation of Windows 3.11 Under DosBox

Now launch DosBox by typing in dosbox in terminal window.

after launching DosBox type

mount d /home/dosdrive

to mount dosdrive folder as drive letter d in dosbox . You are free to use any drive letter you want or directory you like to use.

now chdir to d drive and go to the directory where you have copied the windows installation files and type

setup

Opening Screen of Windows 3.11 Installation
Installation in progress (Still in Dos mode )

Follow instructions as shown during installation type in the directory where you would like to install windows (note: change drive letter to d or any other you have assigned using mount command ) and wait of installation to over.
Installation now in graphical mode
Windows setup in progress

Also if the installation or system is running too slowly press Ctrl + F - 12 to increase CPU Cycles i was able to use Windows 3.11 in nice speed in 10,000 Cpu Cycles . You can experiment this value.
Windows 3.1 Starting Up

After installation is over if everything went all right go to the directory where you have installed windows (For me D:Windows ) and type win it should launch Windows 3.11 within few seconds.

Default Windows 3.1 desktop

Windows 3.1 File Manager

Windows 3.1 Mine Sweeper Game
Write (default) Word Processor

Cardfile tool under Windows

I feel probably Windows 3.11 was the most descent of Windows os - fast , quick and less error prone ,you can still get Windows 3.11 if you dont have installation media from various abandonware sites on the Internet , i would not like to mention exact links since this would amount to piracy however if you are really serious you can also use google to find them . But i wouldnt recommend downloading pirated versions .

Some KeyStrokes to remember while using DosBox : -

ALT-ENTER Go full screen and back.

ALT-PAUSE Pause emulation.

CTRL-F1 Start the keymapper.

CTRL-ALT-F5 Start/Stop creating a movie of the screen.

CTRL-F4 Swap mounted disk-image (Only used with imgmount).
Update directory cache for all drives!

CTRL-F5 Save a screenshot.(png)

CTRL-F6 Start/Stop recording sound output to a wave file.

CTRL-ALT-F7 Start/Stop recording of OPL commands.

CTRL-ALT-F8 Start/Stop the recording of raw MIDI commands.

CTRL-F7 Decrease frameskip.

CTRL-F8 Increase frameskip.

CTRL-F9 Kill dosbox.

CTRL-F10 Capture/Release the mouse.

CTRL-F11 Slow down emulation (Increase dosbox Cycles).

CTRL-F12 Speed up emulation (Decrease dosbox Cycles).

ALT-F12 Unlock speed (turbo button).

New 14 Ubuntu 11 10 Oneiric Ocelot Wallpapers Available for Download!

New 14 Ubuntu 11 10 Oneiric Ocelot Wallpapers Available for Download!

Every time Ubuntu releases a new version of their GNU/Linux distribution, they also make sure to include few brand new wallpapers where other GNU/Linux vendors just include one or two "official" wallpapers.

If youre a graphics designer and want to show-off your talent with Ubuntu, well theres a certain protocol that has to be followed before you can send your "baby" :D to Ubuntu art-work team for consideration.

Anyhow, since were like 12-11 days away from the official launch of Ubuntu 11.10, the latest news is that 14 brand-new wallpapers just appeared in the Launch-pad page. Although they may not be the official wallpapers pack... but still most of them would make it to the "official" disk images, I think (cannot remember the whole procedure :D).

Awesome!...
Although I have a very looooooooow talent for drawings and stuff but I gotta say, some of these new wallpapers looks absolutely beautiful! (including the official 11.10 wallpapers, which looks almost like the one with 11.04 btw).

If interested (heck ya you are! :D), you can get the package from this Launch-pad page. Enjoy!.

Multitrack Audio Editor Recorder for Ubuntu GNUSound

Multitrack Audio Editor Recorder for Ubuntu GNUSound

If you have a lot of multitrack audio files that need a little editing and looking for a software application that lets you do it without getting in your way, then GNUSound is an excellent little utility.

Although we do have the more popular Audacity which is a very powerful audio recorder and editor itself, but if youre looking something similar in natures + comes recommended by the GNU dudes themselves ;-), then GNUSound is also a very competitive one without a doubt as well.

Main features...

*. Has the ability to load and edit audio file types such MP3, WAV, OGG Vorbis, FLAC, AAC etc. But unless you have installed Lame MP3 encoder for instance, then you wont be able to load and edit MP3 files using it.

So if you want the maximum usability out of it, then make sure you have installed appropriate audio package separately. You can get more info from here.

*. Cut/Copy/Delete/Paste using the time-line window section with ease.

*. You can even import audio track inside a lot other multimedia containers using the ffmpeg libraries installed as well.

*. Amplify, Bandpass, delay, fade, normalize, reverse playback, etc are just a few of the built in tools.

*. Play and Record audios.

*. Zoom in/out.

*. Lots of selection based features such as: left, right, nudge left/right, snap to grid, etc.

*. Playback and Record supported via Alsa, OSS, Jack or Dummy audio servers.

*. Change sample rate 8/16/32, audio channels, bitrate, recording buffer size, etc via the "Preferences" window.

*. Insert or delete individual tracks.

*. Save audio track in different formats and error recovery (say to due to the application crash, etc)... are the main features to mention.

You can install GNUSound in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, 11.10, 10.10 and 10.04 by using the below command in your Terminal window.
sudo apt-get install gnusound
It did crash once I was using it but other than that it was certainly quite robust and was resource friendly too.

So if youre looking for an easy to use, fast loading multitrack audio editor and a recorder for Ubuntu (its designed for the Gnome desktop actually) that comes recommended by the GNU foundation, then GNUSound is certainly a simple yet a powerful utility which is also completely free! (including free as in freedom too :D).

Nggak tau persisnya gemana.

lspci | grep -i vga

Nih contoh hasilnya dari salah satu computer:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 661/741/760 PCI/AGP or 662/761Gx PCIE VGA Display Adapter

Disini gue akan bagi-bagi cara settingnya. Tapi gue nggak mau ribet cari resolusi maximalnya.

sudo -i
dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

/etc/init.d/gdm restart

Caranya simple aja. Masukin aja frekuensi monitor ke xorg.conf.

Install dulu paket "xresprobe" kalo emang blon terinstall.

apt-get install xresprobe

Setelah itu, deteksi aja dengan command ini:

ddcprobe

vbe: VESA 3.0 detected.
oem: VIA P4M800 PRO
vendor:
product:
memory: 65536kb
mode: 640x480x256

timing: 640x480@60 Hz (VGA)

timing: 800x600@60 Hz (VESA)
timing: 800x600@72 Hz (VESA)
timing: 800x600@75 Hz (VESA)
timing: 1024x768@87 Hz Interlaced (8514A)
timing: 1024x768@75 Hz (VESA)
ctiming: 1152x864@75
ctiming: 1280x1024@60
dtiming: 1280x1024@70
monitorserial: FJ17971P24PS
monitorname: DELL E177FP
monitorrange: 31-80, 56-75

Perhatiin aja baris "monitorrange".

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
HorizSync 31-80
VertRefresh 56-75

EndSection

Sekarang coba restart lagi GDM-nya. Dan liat hasilnya. Umumnya langkah ini akan mendapatkan hasil. Dan nggak pake resolusi 800x600 lagi ;-)

Paksain resolusi tertentu

Walau resolusi udah nggak 800x600 lagi, kadang kita masih nggak puas. Kenapa?

Gue nggak mau ribet masalah dukungan 3D. User office nggak perlulah pake 3D. Biasanya cari resolusi 1024x768 aja. Mungkin ada beberapa tergantung frekuensinya. Gue biasanya pilih yang 70-75 saja. Karena rata-rata monitor sini lama juga. Ulang aja command "ddcprobe" dengan cara ini:

ddcprobe |grep 1024x768

Dan ini hasilnya:

mode: 1024x768x256
mode: 1024x768x64k
mode: 1024x768x16m
timing: 1024x768@87 Hz Interlaced (8514A)
timing: 1024x768@75 Hz (VESA)

Section "Device"
Identifier "Generic Video Card"
Driver "vesa"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Generic Monitor"
Device "Generic Video Card"
Defaultdepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768"
EndSubSection

EndSection

Lalu generate modeline dari command ini:

gtf 1024 768 75

Nih hasilnya:

# 1024x768 @ 75.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 60.15 kHz; pclk: 81.80 MHz
Modeline "1024x768_75.00" 81.80 1024 1080 1192 1360 768 769 772 802 -HSync +Vsync

Simpan ke dalam xorg.conf disection Monitor:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
HorizSync 31-80
VertRefresh 56-75

# 1024x768 @ 75.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 60.15 kHz; pclk: 81.80 MHz
Modeline "1024x768_75.00" 81.80 1024 1080 1192 1360 768 769 772 802 -HSync +Vsync

EndSection
